Short Term Training Program
Program Description: The Short Term Training Award was established to provide professional level training to enhance the development of Cyprus.  The emphasis, therefore, is on the contribution of proposed training to the development of Cyprus and not on the contribution of training to the professional qualifications of the candidate.  Specific courses are helpful but the selection panel is much more interested in why a project is important and how the training will be used rather than with the name of a specific course and when and where it will be conducted.  Although training may be conducted at a university, candidates will not normally gain credit for courses.  The American concept of training usually consists of fixed courses with some practical exercises and field visits.  It usually entails a formal program with direct participation by the trainee.  For financial reasons, rarely can a government or private organization provide lengthy "on the job" training to visitors.  Most offices welcome international visitors for one or two days but are unable to devote longer periods.   The only programs which will not follow this concept are all medical programs which will be observation only for those not licensed to practice in the U.S. since malpractice insurance does not cover visiting professionals.  The length of a program will be determined by the training needs of the candidate and the availability of the training resources to satisfy that need.  The normal range of training visits is between three weeks and three months.

Study of the U.S. Institutes for Secondary School Educators

Program Description: The Branch for the Study of the United States of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State invites candidate nominations once per year for the Summer Study of the United States Institutes for Secondary Educators.  The institutes take place over the course of 6 weeks usually beginning in mid-June.  The Institutes provide two multinational groups of 30 secondary educators each (English teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, ministry of education officials) with a more comprehensive understanding of U.S. politics, culture, and society.  Through a variety of traditional, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, the programs will elucidate the history and evolution of U.S. institutions and values, broadly defined, and have a strong contemporary component.  The institutes serve to illuminate the contemporary political, social and economic debates in American society.
The ultimate goal is to promote the development and improvement of courses and teaching about the U.S. at academic institutions abroad.  Applicants must be nominated by the Ministry of Education.  For more information check the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State Website.

Note for Non-Cypriots
Those not eligible to apply for our programs due to citizenship should check the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State website to see if Fulbright programs exist in their respective countries.  First, search to see if there is a Fulbright Commission in your country, and if not, check to see if there is a US embassy or consulate that may administer grant programs or may be able to tell you who to contact in your country about scholarship programs.
Students interested in general information on scholarships through US institutions directly, or from other sources, may check our Study in the U.S. link.
