SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The terms "financial aid" and "scholarship" are generally used interchangeably, but in most cases "financial aid" refers to need-based aid (aid which is based on need) and "scholarships" refer to merit-based aid (aid based on academic achievement). Both types of aid are extremely competitive and require high academic standards and performance. Please note that "financial aid" is generally geared towards American students and international students should be looking more at "scholarships," but this is not true for all universities.

Below are the main types of financial assistance available for international students who want to study in the United States.

Cyprus Fulbright Commission: The Cyprus Fulbright Commission has an undergraduate scholarship program. Please have a look at our "Grants for Cypriots" section at http://www.fulbright.org.cy/Scholarship Programs.htm

Funding from Colleges: Many colleges and universities offer financial aid/scholarships to international students, but do not assume that they all do or that this is easy. Approximately 8% of international students receive funding from U.S. institutions.

Please see our Useful Financial Aid Links section to research schools with financial aid/scholarships for international students.

Sports Scholarships: Many U.S. universities offer sports scholarships which may cover all or part of tuition and living costs to talented athletes. Sports scholarships are offered in a variety of sports but athletic talent is not the only factor taken into consideration for such a scholarship. Students must also meet normal entrance requirements to the university.

For more information on sports scholarships, talk to a counselor at the Cyprus Fulbright Commission. Also have a look at our Useful Financial Aid Links under "Sports Scholarships."

International Awards:
Financial aid from foundations, organizations, and the U.S. government may exist but this form of aid is generally very limited and aimed at advanced graduate students.

Loans:
You may be able to take out a loan but most loans require an American co-signer or guarantor. Please visit the following website for information on loans for international students: http://www.globalslc.com/

Employment: International students can only work up to 20 hours per week on campus. You should not expect to pay for any major expenses simply by working on campus. A campus job may cover some of your personal and living expenses.

To schedule an appointment with an educational adviser, please email us.  To be eligible to make an appointment to see an adviser you must first attend a free weekly Information Session
