SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
There are many sources of financial aid for
graduate students that you can look into. Most forms of financial aid are
highly competitive; therefore, it is essential that you are meticulous
when applying.
Here are some of your options:
Cyprus
Fulbright Commission: Please have a look at our "Grants for
Cypriots" section at http://www.fulbright.org.cy/Scholarship
Programs.htm to see what kinds of scholarships are available through
the Cyprus Fulbright Commission.
Private
U.S. Sources and International Organizations: Private U.S.
agencies, foundations, business corporations and professional associations
often award financial aid in the interest of furthering international
exchange. Please ask a counselor to show you our available resources.
U.S.
Universities: About one-third of
international graduate students receive financial aid from U.S.
universities. The amount granted may vary due to the field of study, level of
study, and type of institution (research universities are likely to
have the most funds available). The main types of financial aid
available from universities are:
Fellowships:
Departments and institutions award fellowships on the basis of
academic merit, normally after the first year of study. Graduate
fellowships may be modest, covering only tuition and fees, or full
grants, providing the cost of tuition, fees, and monthly stipends
for maintenance. Fellowships rarely cover the total cost of living.
Assistantships:
Assistantships are the most common form of financial aid at the
graduate level. Assistantships are cash awards that require the
performance of services usually related to the field of study.
They typically involve 10-20 hours or work per week. Sometimes an assistantship carries with it a waiver
(a remission or reduction) of tuition and fees. Awards may range from
as little as $500 to as much as $30,000 (or higher, if high tuition
costs are waived). Students may be awarded teaching assistantships,
research assistantships or administrative assistantships.
When applying for financial aid, keep in
mind that competition is fierce and that you are competing against both
international and American students. Make sure that your application is
neat and professional. One important point to consider is that doctoral
students are more likely to receive aid.
